I initially looked into getting a hair dryer when I grew a beard. When towel drying, I noticed that once my beard got long enough, my face wouldn’t easily dry. The dampness would irritate my face.
All the hair dryers I could find were underpowered and shrouded in the most ridiculously swoopy plastic housings. I wanted something that looked more like a raw tool. Something industrial.
I found a blower used for car and motorcycle detailing. The same motor is often used in pet dryers too. The motor comes freshly oiled and has a break in time when you can still smell the oil a bit. Although it is still noisy like a typical hair dryer, it is significantly more powerful. I removed the normal mounting points and bolted a wooden handle to the top of it. This lets the dryer stand on its feet while keeping the handle out of the way when you’re not using it. The cord is plenty long to be used anywhere in a bathroom. The power switch has a nice clicky toggle to it. It’s not the lightest dryer and can feel a bit heavy after a bit, but I maintain that the weight is a good thing. You want shoulder muscles, right?
